Hiking and Biking

Gap Mountain Retreat has a small network of on-site trails and is adjacent to the Jefferson National Forest, with over 50 miles of multiuse trail at your fingertips. Additional hiking and biking opportunities can be found on the nearby Appalachian Trail and recreation areas including Cascades National Recreation Trail, Mill Creek Nature Park, and Mountain Lake.

New River

Located one mile from Gap Mountain Retreat, the New River is perfect for adventure on the water or a peaceful afternoon along the riverbank. Visitors can canoe, kayak, or paddleboard the Class I-III stretch of river from McCoy to Pembroke or Eggleston. McCoy falls is a popular play spot for kayakers as well as tubers. You can also spend the day fishing for smallmouth bass, musky, catfish, and other freshwater species.

Birding

Gap Mountain Retreat’s varied elevations and extensive woodland provide opportunities to observe a wide variety of resident and migratory species year round. During spring migration, you will hear and see warblers, tanagers, buntings, and other songbirds. Hawks and owls hunt on the property year round, and wild turkey are frequent visitors. The New River is a great place to spot ospreys, bald eagles, cormorants, kingfishers, and herons.
